Obituary

Christine Louise Whetmore, 100, Green Bay, Wisconsin, died peacefully at a local assisted living facility on January 4, 2020.  Born on January 9, 1919, in upstate New York, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Bessie (Sutton) Walker.

Christine grew up on a farm in rural New York, being  the second oldest of 5 siblings. One of the treasured family photos shows Christine ploughing a field, walking behind a team of horses.

On September 3, 1950, Christine married the late Clayton Edward Whetmore in Cortland, New York.  Christine was a graduate of Union College, Lincoln, Nebraska, where she received her RN degree. She subsequently worked as an Obstetrical nurse at Conley Maternity Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, where she later became the head nurse, prior to starting a family.  The wife of an Obstetrician, Christine devoted herself to raising 3 children, as her husband was frequently gone delivering babies. Nurses still remember her bringing him meals at the hospital where he was assisting a mother in Labor. She loved him dearly, and was always his strongest supporter, no matter what his next adventure.

Christine had flower and vegetable gardens, canned fruits and vegetables, was fond of watching birds, enjoyed oil painting, and played the piano.  As a mother, she was an excellent seamstress and phenomenal baker, making almost all of the family meals from scratch. She had a strong Christian faith and was an active member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church.  Her greatest legacy to her 3 children was the gift of music. She inspired them to play the piano, while she practiced; she encouraged them to play a brass instrument, as well. She saw to it that all 3 children started music lessons at an early age, insisting that they practice 6 days per week, even when they didn't want to!   Innumerable hours were devoted driving to and from music lessons, recitals, and concerts. Her dedication paid off, as all 3 became accomplished musicians, owing to her perseverance.

Christine is survived by her 3 children, Dr. Clayton (Sandy) Whetmore, Ooltewah, TN, Dr. George (Deb) Whetmore, Suamico, WI, and Joy (Jim) Lauck, Datil, NM; eight grandchildren, Heidi (Matt) Maenner, Eric (Jamie) Whetmore, Dennis (Brittany) Burris, Joseph Burris, Jim (Cherelle) Whetmore, John (Rachel) Penmore, Becky Whetmore, Christine Penguino; and eight great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, along with her 5 siblings, Mary (Robert) Quaile, Eleanor Walker, Cornelia Walker, Earl (Mary) Walker, and Leonard (Sally) Walker.

In lieu of a funeral, the family is planning a memorial service at a later date.
