Joan Marie
Walters Johnson
Aug 9, 1931 — Aug 8, 2022
Joan Marie Walters Johnson died peacefully on August 8, 2022, a few hours before her 91st birthday, and surrounded by her loving children. Born on August 9, 1931, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, she was the beloved daughter of Edwin C. Walters and Eleanore R. (Koeppen) Walters. Joan had fond memories of her childhood in Milwaukee, where she graduated from Messmer Catholic High School before moving on to Business School.
She met the love of her life, George, while living in Milwaukee, and wed on August 13, 1955. They settled in Shorewood, Wisconsin, where they lived for twenty years. Together they enjoyed neighborhood and family gatherings as they began raising six children. In 1973, Joan and George moved the family to Green Bay, Wisconsin, where they lived and loved through 65 years of marriage until George's death on December 3, 2020.
Joan was blessed with many talents. She was a gifted seamstress, having worked at The Bridal Chateau for decades. She created everything from cheerleading and dance costumes to bridal and attendant gowns for many family weddings. She maintained multiple gardens, offering beautiful bouquets for any visitors, and her German cooking brought extra dinner guests on a regular basis. But her creativity was best expressed at Christmas time, when she would adorn the home with multiple trees, holiday villages, and beautifully wrapped gifts. The Green Bay community was also blessed to have Joan, as she was a volunteer for the Weidner Center, a Boy Scout den mother, and a performer in local plays.
Faith, family, and friends were the cornerstones of Joan's life. A trip to Medjugorje was a highlight, but she and George also loved traveling with friends, and spending time with family in Green Bay and on trips to Door County.
Joan is survived by her six children, Kenneth Johnson of Shorewood, Wisconsin; Linda Johnson Boyle (Robert) of Green Bay; Kathleeen Johnson of Green Bay; Steven Johnson (Kristine) of St. Charles, Missouri; Lisa Johnson Zeller (Peter) of De Pere, Wisconsin; and Scott Johnson of Appleton, Wisconsin. Joan is further survived by her grandchildren, Christina Bunker Liddicoat (Jeff), John Michael Bunker (Hilary), Brett Schauer (Chelsey), Benjamin Schauer (Anna Davis), Emilie Melendy (Mitchell), Tyler Johnson, Colin Johnson, Nichole Johnson, Abby Zeller, Nate Zeller, Jackson Zeller, Stephanie Johnson, Kenny Johnson, and Bobby Johnson; great- grandchildren Brock Liddicoat, Grant Liddicoat, Jack Bunker, Mason Bunker, Isla Melendy, Miles Melendy, and Imogene Schauer. Joan is further survived by her brother, Dr. Thomas Walters (Judy), her godson Michael Destache, and many other nephews and nieces.
Joan's husband, George A. Johnson, preceded her in death. Additionally, she was preceded in death by her parents, Edwin Walters and Eleanore (Koeppen) Walters of Shorewood Wisconsin, and brother, James Walters (Lila); father-in-law George Edwin Johnson and mother-in-law Mary Christine (Altenthaler) Johnson of Oconto, Wisconsin, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will be held Monday, August 15, at 9:30 a.m. at Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Green Bay, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. Pfotenhauer Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements; online condolences are welcome at www.PfotenhauerFuneralHome.com .
The Johnson family wishes to thank the staff at Bayshore Village in Green Bay for their care and support of Joan, especially as her Alzheimer's disease worsened. We would like to encourage anyone interested in supporting Alzheimer's research to donate to Alzheimer's Association in Joan's memory.
