Joanne L.
Cahoon
Jun 2, 1939 — Jan 15, 2024
Joanne L. Cahoon was a beloved sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, who passed away peacefully on January 15, 2024 at the age of 84, surrounded by family.
Joanne was born to Eleanor C. and Walter E. Strutz, on June 2, 1939 in Green Bay, where she grew up. Along with her twin sister, she attended Annunciation Catholic School and graduated from West High in 1957.
A year later, Joanne was standing on the train platform in Green Bay, on the way to visit her sister, when her father pointed to a sharp-looking young man in Air Force dress blues and said, "There's one for you, Joanne." Her father could not have imagined how right he was. On that train Ora and Joanne started a conversation that would last 63 years!
Joanne and Ora were married at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Suamico on November 27, 1958. After starting their lives together in Suamico, they bought a farm in Little Suamico in 1969, where they raised their 5 children and spent the rest of their lives.
Joanne handled all aspects of their dairy operation. She always had a large garden, canned, cooked, knit, sewed, upholstered, and volunteered in her community and at church. She loved making quilts and baby blankets for those she loved. She also enjoyed many hours in her kitchen, teaching her children and grandchildren how to cook and bake.
After retiring from farming, she used her upholstery skills to find a second career in commercial sewing for the next 30 years and acquired some computer skills along the way.
When her girls were young, Joanne was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader. The girls in her troops loved learning many things from her such as how to make butter, bake cream puffs, and do other fun projects.
Joanne also loved to share her talents and the bounty of her garden and orchard with family, friends, and her church. She had many volunteer roles at church. Every year she made dozens of pies and gallons of chili which were favorites at the St. John's Fall Bazaar and highly prized at the church auction. Joanne also loved singing in the church choir and later managed the senior lunch meal site at the church.
Joanne leaves behind her five children and their families: Lauri Cahoon-Draus (Joseph), Nannette (Jeff) Sorenson, Sandra Cahoon Mehre (Steve Herro), Susan (Jim) Olson and Ora B. Cahoon III (Amy Johnson); and 13 grandchildren: Vincent, Pamela (fiancé Zac Pecore), and Deanna Cahoon-Draus; Kate (Brian) Bergseng, Lee (Kelsey) and Christopher (Kristina) Sorenson; Evan (Jade), Alex (Jessica), and Garrett (Bella) Mehre; Ella (Dean) Berven and Steven Olson; and Willow and Miller Cahoon. Joanne was also blessed with eight great-grandchildren: Luca and Mikael Berseng; Nolan and Evie Sorenson; and Lillian, Clara, Meredith, and William Mehre.
She will be dearly missed by her twin sister Marj (Todd) Radick, niece Teresa, nephews Mark, Dean, and Daniel and their families.
She was preceded in death by her husband Ora, father Walter E. Strutz, mother Eleanor C. (Plettner) Strutz, sister Nancy Strutz, and granddaughter Angel Eleanor Cahoon-Draus.
A visitation will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1253 Cty Rd J, Little Suamico on Saturday, January 27 from 12:00 - 2:00. A service officiated by Pastor Stacy Malzhan will follow.
