Obituary

Kathy (Kathleen) Goodman Lockard of Green Bay passed away on July 1, 2022 after a difficult 17 month battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). She was 76. Kathy was a wonderful wife, loving mom and grandma, caring friend, dedicated teacher, intrepid traveler, and respected community activist with a desire to leave the world better than she found it. From an early age she wanted to explore and learn about the world and its many cultures. Later Kathy was active in local efforts to help immigrants, promote education, work for a better environment, and preserve democracy.

She was born in 1946 in Lexington, Kentucky, to Daniel Goodman, a journalist and lawyer, and Vivian Nash Goodman, a teacher and school librarian. Kathy earned a BA magna cum laude from the University of Kentucky in political science and was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. She also studied French in Paris and traveled in Europe.

While at the University of Wisconsin-Madison pursuing a PhD in comparative politics, with a particular interest in Africa, Kathy met Craig Lockard, a Californian working on a PhD in world and Asian history. Kathy and Craig shared a passion to experience and understand the wider world. Marrying in Madison in 1970, they then headed together overseas, eventually living for a total of four years abroad during the 1970s-1980s. For their PhD research, they spent one year in Southeast Asia, based in Sarawak (in Malaysian Borneo) and then another year in East Africa, based in Uganda. During those years they also traveled extensively in various Asian and East African nations.

Returning to the U.S. Kathy did some part-time college instruction as well as teaching African politics as a visiting professor at Northwestern University. In 1975, she and Craig moved to Green Bay, where Craig joined the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay faculty while she did adjunct teaching before beginning a long and rewarding career teaching social studies to ESL (ELL) students at Green Bay West High School. The empathy and knowledge Kathy gained in her travels helped her relate to the cultural diversity she encountered in her teaching. She enjoyed her job and her colleagues while mentoring many immigrant students from around the world, some of whom stayed in touch over the years. The birth of their two sons, Chris and Colin, brought new joys to Kathy and Craig, who encouraged them in their studies and extracurricular school activities. They were regulars at the kids' soccer games, tennis matches, band concerts, recitals, plays, musicals, Odyssey of the Mind competitions, Scout activities, etc.

During their careers and in retirement, Kathy and Craig continued travelling, spending 2 more years in Malaysia (based in Kuala Lumpur) with their children. They also visited many new places, among others China, Vietnam, Ireland, Scotland, Spain, Turkey, Morocco, and Cuba. They also enjoyed visiting their son Chris, his wife Melissa, and their two grandsons Josh and Aaron in the San Francisco Bay area as well as son Colin in the several cities where he has lived, most recently Seattle. In Northeast Wisconsin, Kathy devoted her energies to various political campaigns and community organizations, including Literacy Green Bay, the Migration Network, and especially the League of Women Voters of Greater Green Bay, making many good friends and serving on their Executive Board and various committees while also managing their Facebook page. Among her most enjoyable leisure activities were gardening, nature, taking walks with Craig, reading, listening to NPR, museums, favorite restaurants, monthly breakfasts with close teacher friends, and being with family. She was a dog lover but after the death of her beloved pug she decided not to acquire another dog because of her frequent travels.

The great tragedy of Kathy's life was the death of son Chris from angiosarcoma, a rare and aggressive cancer, four years ago; he was 41. She was also preceded in death by her parents, uncles, and aunts. She will be greatly missed by her loving husband of 52 years, Craig, son Colin of Seattle, grandsons Josh and Aaron Lockard and daughter-in-law Melissa Levie Lockard of Lafayette, California, sister Peggy Moody and brother-in-law Wes Moody in Winchester, Kentucky, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, in-laws, friends and colleagues. The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, caregivers, and support staffs of Unity Hospice, Home Instead, Bellin Hospital and Home Health, and Rennes Health Center for caring for Kathy during her challenging struggle with ALS. A Celebration of Kathy's Life may be held later this summer or fall. Donations in Kathy's name can be made to the League of Women Voters of Greater Green Bay on the LWVGGB website (http://my.lwv.org/wisconsin/greater-green-bay) or by checks made out to LWVGGB, P.O.
