Larry H.
Schmiling
Jul 28, 1949 — Apr 15, 2023
Larry H. Schmiling, 73, passed away on Saturday, April 15th. Larry was born on July 28, 1949 to Jane (Krueger) Schmiling and Henry Schmiling in Algoma, WI. As a child, he enjoyed spending summers outdoors with his sister and many cousins. He graduated from Kewaunee High School in 1967. After graduation, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in the Vietnam War as an Anti-Tank Assault Man until his honorable discharge in November, 1969.
Like many veterans, he returned home unsure what the future would hold. He tried out different options: owning a Standard gas station, retail, and a brief stint as a police officer with the Algoma Police Department. In 1975, he joined the Brown County Sheriff's Department as a patrol officer. In 1991, he was promoted to Sergeant. He retired in January 2003. After retirement, he took a few years to explore, but eventually found his way back to the law enforcement industry. He worked security for the federal courthouse in Brown County for several years.
Larry's family was the pride of his life. In 1987, he married Ginny (Houle) Schmiling. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his sister Nancy Schmilng; daughters, Amanda Tassia and Cassie (Schmiling) Walizer; son-in-law Ben Walizer; granddaughters Hailey Brown, Maddie Walizer, and Charlotte Walizer; and former wife Ginny Schmiling. He was a beloved uncle to his nieces and nephews.
In his free time, he enjoyed woodworking, reading, watching old movies, and cruising around in his Corvette. More than anything, he enjoyed quality conversations with friends.
Visitation will be at Pfotenhauer Funeral Home at 2379 E. Mason Street on Saturday, April 22nd 10:00 AM - 11:45 AM. A brief prayer service will follow. He will be entombed at Nicolet Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
