Leon James Calewarts, 92, passed away in the early morning of September 23, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Leon was born February 21, 1932 to Roland and Hattie (Schmechel) Calewarts. He graduated from West High School in 1949 and following high school, he married Gladys L. Moes on June 12, 1954. Leon is now reunited with the love of his life, Gladys, who preceded him in passing on September 16, 2024.
Leon worked at Thew Supply Company and Olson Trailer and Body in the stock room, as inventory control. Leon enlisted in the Naval Reserve and after 8 years, received an honorable discharge. Leon was a member of the Howard-Suamico Rescue Squad, where he and Pat Ryan procured two new rescue squads, while selling the old one to Lakewood, WI. He was a charter member of Good Shepard Lutheran Church. Leon was involved in the purchase of the passage on Idlewild Ct. where Good Shepherd held their first service after starting in the elementary school. He was involved in the purchase of the present site as he served on the church council. Leon was a charter member of the Howard-Suamico Optimist Club, where he served on the Board of Directors. Leon loved hunting, fishing, bowling, dancing, playing cards, traveling with Gladys and spending time with family and friends. He also treasured his time spent at the cottage on Pelican Lake and at their hunting cabin on Long Lake. He loved his family very much and Leon will be incredibly missed.
Leon is survived by his children, Debbie (Mark) Habeck, Karen (Joseph) Femling, and Kevin (Wendy) Calewarts; grandchildren, Jerod (Jesse) Habeck, Jonathan (Karla) Habeck, Jason (Katie) Habeck, Cortney (Bryant) Gerbers, Tyler (Jade) Femling, Samantha (Zach) Nasto, and Logan Calewarts; great grandchildren, Addison, Alyssa, Austin, MacKenzie, Taylor and Mya Habeck; Gavin and Skylar Gerbers & Giuliana, Rayne, and Rome Nasto.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Gladys; daughter, Cheryl L. Calewarts and parents.
Family and friends may call on Monday, September 30 from 10:00 – 12:00 PM at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2736 Glendale Ave, with a service to follow.
Due to Gladys' recent passing, family requests no flowers – thank you.
