Mary J.
Sylvester
Oct 16, 1950 — Oct 29, 2025
In Loving Memory of Mary Josephine Sylvester
October 16, 1950 – October 29, 2025
Born in Oconto, Wisconsin, on October 16, 1950, Mary lived a life defined by her love of the Lord, compassion, creativity, and a commitment to others. From her earliest days as a proud military daughter traveling the world, to her years of service and dedication in her community, Mary brought light and kindness wherever she went.
Her professional journey reflected her caring heart. She worked with Unity Hospice and later at Prevea Health, from which she retired. Beyond her career, she gave freely of her time and talents, volunteering at her local food bank, her church, and with the Girl Scouts. Her tireless community service earned her the honor of being named Woman of the Year in Monte Vista, Colorado, a recognition that perfectly captured her lifelong spirit of giving.
Mary had a gift for making life beautiful in both big and small ways. Known for wearing colorful scarves and having a creative touch, she filled her home with handmade crafts, seasonal decorations, and the purple irises she loved so much. Her collections of angel figurines and souvenir spoons from around the world told the story of her adventures and her appreciation for life's simple joys. Having lived in places like Germany and Iran during her father's military service, and later in Monte Vista, Colorado, and Little Suamico, Wisconsin, Mary embraced every chapter of life with curiosity and grace.
She faced her challenges, including two battles with breast cancer, with remarkable courage, humor, and compassion, always thinking of others first. Of all her accomplishments, she was most proud of being a mother to her three daughters. She loved to joke about which one was her favorite, though everyone knew she loved them all beyond measure.
Mary was preceded in death by her father, Conrad Sylvester, and is lovingly survived by her mother, Genevieve (Belongia) Sylvester; her daughters, Christine (Haverfield) Mikeljack, husband Jason, and stepson Tyler Mikeljack; Jeanette (Haverfield) Guse, husband Kirk, and their children Karissa, Ashleigh, and Chase; and Carrie Haverfield. She is also survived by her siblings, Richard Sylvester, Linda Woods, Janet Bouthilet, and Nancy Burbank.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, when family and friends will come together to share stories, laughter, and memories of the love and light Mary brought to all who knew her. Her family finds comfort in knowing her spirit lives on in every person she helped, every kindness she shared, and every smile she inspired.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Paul's Pantry to honor Mary's many years volunteering at a local food bank in Colorado. http://www.paulspantry.org/donate/
