Obituary

Richard Koehl passed away, unexpectedly, on December 5, 2015, in Lexington, KY. Richard was born January 3, 1928, in Kenosha, WI, to Arthur and Margaret Lewis Koehl.   He attended Kenosha, WI, public schools in the Depression where he developed a life time love of books. After high school, Richard enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving his country in Japan from September 1946 to December 1947. He was honorably discharged as a Tech 5 receiving the World War ll Victory Medal and Army of Occupation Medal Japan. After the army, he attended UW-Madison, WI, where he earned a PhD in Philosophy. He met Mary Faith Stanke there and they were married January 17, 1951.

Richard taught at the University of NY, Buffalo, for many years. Richard and Faith retired to Las Cruces, New Mexico, where they enjoyed roaming the state looking for precious rocks. Richard made many pieces of jewelry from the rocks they collected.

In 2002, Richard and Faith moved back to WI. Faith died in 2005 after 50 years of marriage! After Faith's death, Richard met his "fishing buddy" Frank Knapp. They spent a lot of time in his boat fishing on WI lakes near Green Bay. Frank and Richard became great friends and Frank actually became his care-giver after Richard was diagnosed with alzheimer's disease in 2010. Richard went to a Methodist church in Green Bay for many years and led a discussion group on books for his church.

Richard moved to London, KY, in 2013, and lived with his adopted family, Frank Knapp and Karen until his death.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, Robert, Don, William, and Marge. He is survived by his nieces, Dinny and Sarah and nephews Stefan, Jeremy, Gary, Jason and sister-in-law Jane, all of whom, loved him dearly. He was a special force in their lives!

Richard was an avid reader and loved all kinds of books. He liked to have long discussions about anything with anybody! He loved camping and did a lot of camping with Frank and Karen and her family after he moved to Kentucky. Richard was a kind, gentle man and will be so missed!

A graveside service will be held sometime in the future in WI, where he will be laid to rest next to his wife Faith.
