Obituary

Shirley Ann (VanEnkenvort) Athey, of Howard, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 10, 2024, at the age of 88. Shirley was born to the late Francis and Irene (Kuske) VanEnkenvort on June 7, 1935. She was a graduate of Green Bay West High. On September 17, 1955, she married Alvin Athey.

Shirley and Al were founding members of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Howard and were devoted to their faith and church. She was a social butterfly and enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, sewing, quilting and watching the Brewers, Bucks and mostly the Packers. Attending the Ice Bowl was a favorite memory she loved to share. Early in life, Shirley and Al enjoyed taking their children camping and snowmobiling. They also shared a love of country line dancing and hosting their infamous pool and card parties. She and Al's favorite vacations were their Hawaii trip and the three cruises with friends. Shirley and Al enjoyed volunteering and attending the EAA AirVenture for many years. Shirley always looked forward to attending and enjoying the EAA festivities.

Above all, Shirley had a deep love and pride for her family. She cherished any opportunity to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and many friends.

Survivors include her two children: Mark Athey and Brenda (Jon) Dombrowski; grandchildren: Megan (Brook), Ashley (Chad), Mackenzie (Tyler), Nick (Jenna) and Brooke; great grandchildren: Rion and Flynn, Coltonn and Oaklenn, Emalee, Remington, Cainen and Noah, Chase and Cree; and her sister-in-law, Judi VanEnkenvort.  She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Shirley was preceded by her husband, Alvin; her parents; her brother, Gary VanEnkenvort; grandsons-in-law, Mitchell and Jeff; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

A funeral service to celebrate Shirley's life will be held Thursday, February 15, 2024, at 12:00 pm at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2736 Glendale Avenue, with Pastor Jen Fite officiating. Relatives and friends may begin paying their respects at 10:00 am (Thursday, February 15) at the church until the time of the service at 12:00 pm.  She will be laid to rest at Fort Howard Memorial Park.

Heaven has welcomed one of the greatest angels of them all. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was loving, caring, sweet and spunky. Her quick wit and a knack for humor stayed with her until her last day. She will be greatly missed by many. She did not leave us completely; rather she remains with us in spirit and heart. We love you and miss you very much.

The family wishes to extend a very heartfelt thank you to friends, family and especially all the staff at Eden Vista and Heartland Hospice for their wonderful care and support of our mother. Breanna, Traci and their teams – mom enjoyed all of you.
